Tip 1: You don't need to wait until your passport is expired to renew it.
We recommend renewing your passport at least six months before it expires. Many countries, including popular destinations like Mexico, enforce the "six month rule," which means that you must have at least six months of validity remaining when you enter the country.
Tip 2: There are reasons to renew a passport other than validity time.
Some travelers may need to do an early renewal of their passport, which means renewing the passport more than one year before it expires. Reasons for renewing your passport early include:
- Your passport is low on blank visa pages.
- Your name has legally changed and your passport is more than one year old. (If your passport was issued less than one year ago, you can do a "re-application" service to change the name on your passport.)
- Your passport is looking worn but is not badly damaged enough to be considered mutilated.
- Your appearance has changed significantly since your passport was issued.
Tip 3: Second valid passports can be renewed.
If you are a frequent traveler who holds a second valid passport, you can renew that second passport when it is close to expiration. You will have to demonstrate that you continue to need the secondary passport because of travel needs.
Tip 4: Some passports can't be renewed.
- Minor passports, which are valid for only five years, cannot be renewed. If your passport was issued before you turned 16 years old, you will need to go through the new adult passport procedure to get a new passport.
- Passports that have been expired for more than five years can't be renewed. To replace your long-expired passport, you will need to use the same procedure as a first-time applicant. The only difference is that you can submit your expired passport as proof of citizenship instead of a birth certificate.
- Passports that are badly damaged are considered "mutilated" and no longer valid. If your passport has a torn cover or pages, severe water damage, or unauthorized markings on the information page, you will need to do a damaged passport replacement instead of a renewal.
Tip 5: Supersize it!
Tip 6: Check your new passport when you receive it.
This is another good reason to use a passport expediting service. The company will check your passport thoroughly before sending it back to you, and if they find a mistake, they will submit the passport for correction immediately. You'll have your new passport back in your hands quickly, with no additional fees for resubmission or shipping!
